Item Description
Port Adelaide's 2026 Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey, designed by senior Kaurna man and former player Mickey Kumatpi O'Brien, tells the story of Yartapuulti-meaning "place of sleep." Drawing on traditional Kaurna storytelling, Uncle Mickey weaves cultural narratives through ochre artwork, reflecting how stories were historically shared across artefacts, land, and ceremony. Teal ochre lines represent the waters of the Port River and surrounding coastline, while white ochre lines depict the landscapes of Mudlangga and the spiritual presence of Tarnta, the red kangaroo.
The guernsey features three layered stories: birds and their footprints symbolise local and migratory species that rest in the region; fish and mangroves reference the natural process of toxins leaching into the water, "putting fish to sleep" for easy catch; and Kaurna shields honour ancestors laid to rest on this land. Finished with the Kaurna word "Yuringkarninthi" inside the collar-meaning "enquiring ears," and reflecting the belief that curiosity leads to greater knowledge-this design is a powerful tribute to culture, Country, and community.
